AVIF Conversion

Create AVIF versions for even smaller image files

This is a Pro feature. Activate your license to use it.

AVIF is a next-generation image format that typically produces files 20–50% smaller than WebP and significantly smaller than JPEG. It's supported by Chrome, Firefox, Safari, and Edge.

Requirements

AVIF conversion requires the avifenc binary on your server. Check Compresso > Dashboard > System Status to see if it's available. If not, contact your hosting provider to install it.

Enabling AVIF

  1. Go to Compresso > Settings
  2. Enable AVIF Conversion
  3. Set your preferred AVIF quality (default: 75)

Once enabled, Compresso creates an AVIF version alongside every optimized image — similar to how WebP conversion works.

How Quality Works

AVIF quality ranges from 1 to 100. Lower values mean smaller files but more compression artifacts.

Smart Conversion

Compresso only keeps the AVIF version if it's actually smaller than the original. If the AVIF file ends up larger (which can happen with certain images), it's discarded automatically.

Regenerating AVIF

To create AVIF versions for images that were already optimized before you enabled this feature, use Tools > Regenerate AVIF on the settings page.
